The boys bedroom is not very big, just ten by fourteen, but I have big plans for it. This room needs to sleep my three sons when they are all home and provide a place for them to hang out, do homework, and store their things. I also want the furniture to be flexible enough so that this room will work well as a guest room when they are moved out. Ideally, it could sleep one of my adult children with a spouse and a couple of grandchildren when they come to stay. I’m looking into the future here a bit, but time moves fast and that will be just around the corner.
With all this in mind, most of the furniture will have to be custom built. I need to think like a tiny-home builder or RV designer. The pieces will need to be multi-functional and easy to change around. Here is my plan for the space.

When we built the home, I had envisioned built-in bunk beds in the end with a sofa sleeper under the window. At this stage of my family, we have one son who is here full-time, and two that are in and out between college and church missions. So two beds need to be available all the time, with a third able to quickly deploy. It would be great to have some general seating furniture in here also, as the boys all enjoy playing video games together and like to do their homework in here. Bunk beds and a sleeper couch would accomplish this, but sleeper sofas are not known to be very comfortable and would take up too much space when in use for any extended amount of time.
My solution is to create a mix of built-in and modular pieces to furnish the room. There will be a built-in loft space in the end, spanning the whole width of the room to keep it clean and minimal. One full grown boy will fit great with room to spare, and in the future, two younger children could sleep end to end. I will fit it with one extra long twin mattress and fill in the other end with custom-fit foam.
The other two beds will be identical, movable platform beds that can be used separately or slid together to form one larger bed. For this stage of my family’s needs, one bed will live under the loft space, dressed as a permanent bed. The other will be set under the window outfitted with a cover, backrest, and pillows to double as a couch.
Both of these platforms will be light and movable with custom cut foam mattresses. Down the road, when I want this room to serve as a guest space, I can move them together to form one queen size bed that will fit under the loft. This is why the two single beds will need to be custom sized. Two twin extra long mattresses put together form a king size bed— this configuration is exactly what my husband and I sleep on, with adjustable bases under them—However, I don’t quite have room for a king size set up in this room, so I’m borrowing the concept and making two slightly narrower beds that can form a queen.
The wall opposite the window will have a large tv mounted with all the accompanying video game equipment. I’ll add a couple of small ottomans and this room will also be able to function as a second movie room.

As for decor, there will be some black, some warm-toned wood, and definitely some plaids making up the color scheme for this room. I love the modern feel of oak slats run vertically on the wall, but I’m also wondering about black shiplap. Here are a few mood samples in the direction I’m heading.
I hope I can pull this off. There is a lot of custom work to be done, but I really hope I can make this design a reality. It will serve my family in a lot of ways, now and in the future.
